It's been a while since I've been here!  The place looks different - will take some getting used to.

Anyway, I'm dusting off the 7th Sea book collection and returning to Theah for a while.

Looking for tips/suggestions on how to balance a duel between a Master and a Journeyman, both using Valroux.  The idea is to make this as fair as possible, a sanctioned duel to first blood.

RE:Duels between different mastery levels

Well, if a Journeyman is fighting a duel with a Master, then one has to expect things to be inherently unbalanced AND unfair.  That's kind of a given, and not one you are probably going to want to compromise.  After all, if the Journeyman is going to challenge someone so distinctly better than him, then both the consequences AND the glory (if he/she wins) should be earned.  The question arises, why would a Master take such a duel contract?  Doing so will certainly not enhance his/her Reputation anyway, win or lose.

That said, there may not be all that much difference between a fairly experienced Journeyman and a fairly inexperienced (relatively speaking) Master, especially in a duel to first blood (which I interpret you as meaning, first Dramatic Wound).  I would look more at their relative XP totals than their rank in Valroux to try and guage if this duel's outcome is going to be a no-brainer, or if they are nonetheless close enough matched that the (likely) faster speed and greater overall Knacks of the Master does not outweigh that of the Journeyman.  After all, Exploit Weakness Knacks of 4 or 5 are certainly going to give both duelists brutal ability against each other, irrespective of actual Rank discrepency.  I would also look at their Advantages; a Journeyman with Combat Reflexes and a Panache of 5 is quite likely to be a reasonable match in speed/initiative with a Master with a Panache of 6 but lacking Combat Reflexes.

In this scenario, the Master is a young, arrogant Valroux (is there any other kind?

The Journeyman is the Hero, needing to restore some family honor.

The Master will accept the challenge but put some stipulations on it to make it "more fair".  The duel will likely take place on a ship, so that will help (Balance skills are pretty even).  Perhaps the Master will fight off-handed, or perhaps he will use a different style that he is not a master in.  All of these changes will give the Master built-in excuses if he happens to slip up and takes the first Dramatic Wound.
