Happyness first! I'm probably about to embark on mastering a 7th Sea campaign that will likely be played with some frequency...This is a good thing! The grumpyness however stems from one thing: Metaplot! Not just the alien metaplot, which can be easily ignored (Imight start a thread to discuss an alternate DK and SD configuration, but that's not here), no, it's the fundamental all-pervasive hints to what will happen soon... Montaigne is more or less keyed directly into the revolution, which will more or less happen entirely without PC interaction. In the same way, Avalon is speifically declared an arthurian tragedy... I know I can ignore all these things, but I just needed to vent. I will also say that some of the later developers, actually did try sometimes to counteract this tendency, by creating scenarios that did put the players in the middle of things. sorry about the outburst, I will now return you to your regularly scheduled programming *cue Robin Hood theme*

Good luck.

Might I suggest that you underplay the metaplot for a short while.  Just tell the Pcs that they are in such-and-such a place in the year ####.  Drop a few hints as to recent events, play a few scenarios where the group finds their feet and sorts out what they want to do, then consider moving the metaplot forward (or sideways, or in whichever direction seems most amusing).

ah, just tell them i rewrote that plotline and they are beta testing the storyline prior to a potential new edition.

Or do what i do and look them in the eye and tell them you are running a game being co-GMed by someone else (for me it's normally Dana or Thwak) and their party managed to screw stuff up in that nation so it's turning out differently.

And always remember, the metaplot is there to fill the gaps in the areas you do NOT want to bother adding your own information for.

umm...what?!  I know I have a reputation for twisted vileness, but I had no idea you were adding to it, sal.  Do I even want details?

My personal view has always been pretty much "This is my game, I am the gamemaster and I'll make up whatever the heck plot I want to use."  Of course, I matched that with a true enjoyment of using the metaplot in my game, so what do I know?

naw, you are up to speed. I have not run a 7th sea campaign since we last talked in person. (you do the math on that, it's too large a number for me)

Technically, the origins gathering from this board is now my regular 7th sea group.

Ohhh mastering 7th Sea...I? jealous now

Yeah, the metaplot thing can be a bit of a pain sometimes. I personaly like a lot of the developments, but if I were to run a 7th Sea campaign again, I would put the players right in the middle of these "key events" and actually let them change the course of the plot if fitting. I? not that married to the metaplot.

Been SO long since I last GMed 7th Sea...

I always treated the metaplot a bit like the game treated history -  I looked at the bits I liked, stole them, changed them about a bit to make them even more interesting and bid the rest of it a sunny "cheerio" as I condemmed it to the dark, stygian realms of Notinmygame. The only bits I stuck to as written related directly to the players, such as needing a big army in Usuura for the Erebus Cross and... certain.... events and... things... happening in Freiburg. Not everything in the metaplot happened, and not all of it in the right order, and a lot of it I didn't give a hoot about. I was also in the process of transforming Avalon into different type of kingdom.... which I think i will stick into it's own tread.
