So, Give your GM a break and take overrunning thegameonce in a while.
Just make sure they want you to do that, and keep in mind that pretty much every long-term GM can be pretty bad as a player. Remember, they are used to roleplaying THE WORLD...one character and having only 1/4 of a part in a game can be not enough activity for them, so you may need to cut them some slack while they readjust and downgrade themselves to that level of play.

Well, maybe you are not liscensed and qualified. some of us are, but the simple truth of the matter is that your statement is accurate.
The game table is time for the game not time for social hour and venting on the real world. (It's been a recurring hassle lately at mine as well that players show up and wnat to share the week's news intead of playing)

Something very simple and common sense like, but some of us forget to do it. If you say that your character is skilled in diplomacy, then take the advance knack "Diplomacy" at LEAST at rank 2, if not 3. Sure it's a lot of points, but your background says you are good at that! So suck it up, pay the points, and stop contradicting yourself. Just my two cents for the day.

Damn straight!
I've had similar in a serenity game when one character was trying to seduce another. The player argued it was unfair to be seduced against his will and the character wouldn't be seduced. My feeling is the player should have put more points in willpower if that was the case.
Then there was the argument about players using their 'powers' on each other. Funnily, if the character had shot the seductress I'm sure there would be no argument about the fairness of using player abilities against each other.

But I am also an excellent swordsman and a passable shot.
So I suggest you take that back.

I have to disagree with that. I've run a 7th sea game for nearly 5 years straight. (generally a big session once every other week) Every now and again I talk one of the players into running an adventure within the campaign structure. It has worked rather well, and I relish the chance to just have to deal with one character. I think my role-playing is enhanced by focusing what was a 'world spanning' attention on only a single character.
As a GM you don't get the chance to play your NPCs to the same level as a character. That isn't to downgrade NPCs, it is just that if you are playing them as characters you are putting too much emphasis on them in your game and you need to give the players a chance! :-)
Being a player occationally also does your GMing good. Too many GMs forget what it is like to be on the other end of their God-like powers, and a quick reminder often helps them be more sensitive to player's needs.

Greetings , this is my first post on the site and thank you for hosting such a nice online resource for 7th Sea. I only recently started playing the game within the past couple weeks and am thoroughly enjoying the system and world immensely. Go Eisen!
My GM has asked me to do some running of games for him and his SO and I generally have no problem with that whatsoever except that past attempts never did seem to work out that well. You see, my GM is extremely knowledgeable in every game system I know and more and will spend as long as it takes crunching numbers and choosing the most perfect combo of skills/racial abilities/advantages/stats etc...ad nauseum..until he comes up with the most powerful creation he can. Now, comign up with great characters is fine but when I find myself having to hike my prepared adventures up a notch or two or three because my villains and scenarios arent up to the challenge of this imposing force fresh from the village smithy , it becomes very trying and difficult to maintain a fun atmosphere and challenge to my other players as well who often feel severely outclassed in his presence.
I have had some success in the past in other systems using a Convention sort of playstyle where I give out premade characters with no numbers describing stats ( I as the GM knows that Gustaf has a 16 STR but all the player knows is that his sheet says Very Strong etc) but would be difficult to modify that toward 7th sea I think considering the way stats and knacks work. Downside with that is that I dont like infringing on character creation but seems needed to maintain group cohesion.
Anyone else encounter this type of dilemma or have any suggestions?
Thanks!

Sounds like a septic player to me. When he's the GM he gets to be all-powerful and that makes him "better" than the players and when he's a player he soups up a character to prove that he's "better" than the GM and the other players. To this I say, "Fooey!" The solution is simple, but difficult. He asked you to take on the referee duties, so you get to take on the ref powers and the ref responsibilities. One of those responsibilities is saying "No." If you're intimidated by C-sheets(and you shouldn't be) don't let him make one. Ask him for a short s | | |
