Just curious about this, in the Vendel VS Venstenmannavnjar conflict, which side would you pick? Each side has their pros and cons:

Vendel pros: promotes personal freedom, allows everyone a fair chance to go as high as they can (Val Mokk is the most telling example), open mindedness.

Venstenmannavnjar pros: promotes family values, national pride and the traditions give stability.

Vendel cons: Open to corruption, loss of national identity (Montaigne fashion, Avalon art, Eisen soldiers, etc.), promotes the "everything has a price" (including human life) mentality.

Venstenmannavnjar cons: Xenophobia, close mindedness, culture of violence (let's face it, raiding is not a very nice thing to do).

There are more, of course, but off the top of my head, that's all I can think of.

Personnally, I'd be tempted to side with the Vendel. They usually try to buy you off before they resort to killing you. The Venstenmannavnjar just kill you.

If I was looking at this from a character perspective, I would go with the first character I ever played in 7th Sea. A Vendel/Vestenmannavnjar Rune mage with little common sense. Its a cop out, I know. But still it makes me warm to think of dear Brajn (yes, that was his name).

If I personally had to choose, I would go for the Vendel (sorry Brajn), but would definately have Vesten* leanings.

*the term 'Vesten' is not a slight on any ancestors or an attempt to insult. I am just too lazy to type out the full name.

I would have to play a Vesten, just because of 13th Warrior.

However, I think I like the Vendel a little more.  But, I think the Vesten are underrepresented somewhat in the books, or at least, their flaws seem to take the forefront.  In general, to my eye, they come off as backward barbarians.  A character that focused on the courage, detication, and loyalty inherent in their society would be alot of fun.

To even make an attempt to describe the gallons of thrice-filtered evil required to bring such a horrible monster into being would need to include sound effects of barking dogs, a high school marching band, a plate of escargot and an entire routine of slapstick comedy performed by trained rodeo clowns and some ebola monkeys. Like I always say, you can always use ebola monkeys to help illustrate a point. All of these things would need to be gathered into a big pile and poked with pointy sticks to even begin to describe the kind of evil I'm talking about. That's evil man.

I'd agree with MHC , there is precious little information about the Vestenmannavnjar in the books.

I'm with the Vestenmannavnjar, I don't like capitalism...

I'm actually considering trying to sit down and write some stuff about the Vestenmannavnjar (yes, I know, I always promise to do stuff, but end up playing WoW instead, but still).

Interesting point about the Vesten being under represented. It's true that we don't get much info about them, and what we do get... *spoiler alert*

From the story of the living runes we get in the Vendel/Vesten book, I wonder if Valhalla is not the other side of the barrier, and the voices of the ancestors are not a trick of the Thalusai... Because if that's the case, boy are the Vendel right to get rid of that religion. What an irony it would be if Ragnarok (ie. the Fourth Prophet) were to be caused by the Vesten clinging to their old ways...

*end spoiler*

But then again, the Vendel/Vesten book was not exactly the best in the lot. Lot's of fluff, but some of the rules were confusing to me, especially the merchant patron one.

Didn't it also include the rule for investments, allowing a semi-decent merchant character a guaranteed winning on high-risk investments?

Yep, there was that too. TN 20 to get maximum profits from a high risk investment... I don't understand how it's supposed to work.

It says that you roll a single exploding die, then you had your Wits+Accounting to the roll. Vendel heroes also add 1 to the roll to reflect their financial acumen! Using that system, it's impossible to get only one or two on the table, and getting over 20 is ridiculously easy. Especially considering the Vendel trait bonus is Wits!

I'm going over the rules forum to see if anyone ever found a sensible explanation for these things.

But a lot of stuff about Vendel economics didn't make much sense, if you look at how it works in real life.

But there is one thing I'm rather curious about. In the GM's guide it says that Val Mokk has "money to burn". I really would have liked a list of the holdings of each league chair, and Val Mokk's in particular, along with a map of Kirk. It's an awful lot of work to make these things up, even more so without a landmark.
