I put this topic here because the Swordsman School section is for new schools. The Donvan apprentice ability saysd it grants a free raise for the buckler for actions made with the buckler. Is this for all actions made with the buckler such as Bind? Other schools say their free raise for an off-hand weapon is for parry.

Pretty much anything to do with swordsman schools should be in the swordsman school section. It just happens that most posts are about new/net stuff.

The books states "...one free Raise when using the buckler.", so I would say that any use of the Buckler would get the free Raise. [As a GM I would keep it to 'legitimate uses', obviously.]

Some might say that only ' ( Buckler ) ' noted knacks would get the free Raise, but I think it is clear enough.

And in the end, the free Raise for the buckler is not that big of a deal.

and for an idea that a hero might not have considered using the buckler, check out the animated sinbad for the scene with the ice owl.

The free raise applies to all actions with the buckler, because of the near archaic technique involved in using it.  Donovan is the only (published) school in Theah that uses a buckler, and this tends to throw off opponents a good bit.

Its funny how Donovan uses a buckler basically for binding purposes only. You have riposte, so your slapping their sword away with your sword, not your shield. The free raise goes to waist when actively defending since you have riposte and are probably going to have more ranks in Parry (Fencing) than in Parry (buckler). The journeyman ability means you have even more reason to parry with your sword and not your shield.

I love how the fluff totally contradicts the crunch of the school.

Keep in mind, however, that there is no better way to confuse an opponent than to use a weapon for defense and a shield for offense.  You also recieve a free raise when using the advanced knack Attack (buckler), meaning that you could develop a pretty dizzying technique of attacking and binding with the buckler while using the sword to defend and riposte.  Now let's see a Valroux swordsman try to laugh at that!
