OK. There's an Advantage - Published. It was in the Invisible College, if I recall correctly. It said something about raising your reputation because something the character did had gotten published. But, the Advantage doesn't really cover how this is done during gameplay. Then there are the rules that a character could get paid based on his ranks in appropriate Knacks, such as Composer, sculptor, etc. But, these were really based more on the thought that the artist had a Patron and were used for determining initial wealth.I thought I read somewhere in the books, though, that there were rules forcreating something, a roll based on the Trait and Knack to see what quality the item had. But, I cannot find anything about it now. I went ahead and havemade up my own rules (based in part on something I found in a d20 supplement a few years ago). Does anyone recall the location of the rules for creating something (provided I'm not confusing something else with 7th Sea, at least)? I'm not looking for the Invisible College stuff - that is more for inventions, it appears. The rules were fairly simple. I just can't find them now.

So, I take it no one recalls rules regarding charactes creating works of art?  I cannot find it in any of the books I have.  But, I havne't been reading page to page either, only skimming.  Anyone have any idea whether those rules actually exist?

Ok.  Tell me what you think.  I haven't fully play-tested this yet, as I have only run across this need recently.

Drafting Musical Compositions: A composer may create a variety of different musical forms in the following lengths of time. fficeffice" / onload='javascript:showImageWidth(this,600,600)' class='AutoImageWidthTopic' style='cursor:poionter'>

Types of music                          TN                                       Composition time

Suite/Menuet                                  15                                          one month

Ballad                                                      15                                          one month

Hymn/Motet                                      20                                          one month

March/Dance/Waltz                20                                          One month

Mass                                                        25                                          Two months

Sonata/Toccata/Fugue        25                                          Two months

Overture/Prelude                        30                                          Three months

Concerti/Cantata                        30                                          Three months

Concerto                                              35                                          Four months

Requiem/Mass                              35                                          Four months

Symphony/Fantasia              40                                          Six months

Ballet/Oratorio                                40                                          Six months

Opera                                                        40                                          Six months

The piece does not require her undivided attention; however, any absence greater than two weeks increases the time necessary to write the production by one month or the duration of the absence, whichever is longer.

When the work is finished, the player makes a Wits + Composer Knack roll. The final roll indicates the quality of the piece.

Raises can be called to diminish the time it takes to create the piece by one month per raise, or to increase the quality by Rank 5 per raise.  Thus Advantages, such as Spark of Genius or Musical Ear, which give a Free Raise or two, could reduce the time to create a Hymn to no time at all, or increase the quality of the piece in the normal amount of time(thus adding 5 to the resulting roll).

The GM should encourage the player to create a title and brief melody, rewarding the player with a generous circumstance bonus to her Composer Knack roll.

5                  Disappointing

10                Quaint

15                Average

20                Good

25                Great

30                Wonderful

35                Amazing Masterpiece

40                Awe-inspiring Masterpiece

Income: The musical piece generates income equal to the months spent composing the work added to her Composer Knack rank added to her Wits rank, multiplied by the result of the Composer roll.  However, compositions with a modified result of 10 or less generate no income.

The musical composer must retain a record of all her compositions including their titles and the modified Profession (musical composer) check result.

Masterpiece: If the character's final Composer check equals or exceeds 35, the character has written a masterpiece. Because of the public's familiarity with the work, she adds an additional +1 bonus, per masterpiece, to all Reputation checks.  In addition, the composer receives a one-time monetary bonus of 10 guilders for every masterpiece.

Published:  When the composer successfully completes 5 pieces, he is treated as having a 1HP Published Advantage (though the additional one-time gain of money does not occur, as it has occurred for each piece)

In my group, we keep stuff like this a lot more simpler. The player rolls, calling for a TN 5 + however many Raises. A TN 40 is a Masterpiece. In between are varying levels of quality. The time it takes is usually just based off a GM determination based on what type of art/music it is and how well they exceeded their roll. After all, in the end this is just something to enhance the play of the game, so we like it simple and fun.

Nice chart. Very useful for players that just have to know what they are trying for. But with 7th Sea and this situation, I SWAG it.

Don't tell my players, but if they were to try something and give an inspiring description I would lean in their favor. So SWAG'ing gives me the freedom to do so.

So, taking this particular topic WAY afar, I saw your term and thought, well you can't mean freebies given out (like at conventions) so I googled SWAG.  I came up with the following possibilities...

1.  Marijuana.  Whatever you come up with while high, you're gonna go with it.

2.  Studies in Women And Gender - you're going to make your characters swashbuckle their way through a sensitivity class.

3.  A country inn in Waynesville NC - Gaming retreat?

4.  SourceWare Archive Group - Ok, I got nothing...

5.  Semantic Web Agreement Group - would probably be useful for me cause I wasn't familiar with the acronym.

6.  Window Treatments - well you did make them take a sensitivity class.

I now return you to your very informative thread.
