So, my players picked a fight with a Montaigne warship which had stopped them for an inspection (well, actually, to confiscate all their stuff and kidnap their doctor...). The two ships are broadsides and stopped, but pointing opposite directions.
A small contingent of soldiers and an officer came aboard and now they're in combat. The Montaigne ship has a row of 12 soldiers with muskets along the rail. Now they're about to fire into the mix of player characters and faceless crew on the deck. It's a long range shot, but should they actually succeed, I need to know how it should work, since the brute squad gunmen are firing somewhat at random.

They are comprised of two threat level 3 brute squads. So their rolls would be 6k3 for the shots. The problem is they are not all firing at the same person. They're firing into a thin "crowd" of people.

I didn't think the mass combat system sufficient. So I'm considering making the roll and adding a hit for those whose TN is less than the result. There are 12 muskets being fired into the crowd of eight players and eight nameless crew (not including the additional 4 Montaigne soldiers on deck, also potential targets.)Anyone have a better suggestion?

FWIW, when I ran a ship combat, I simply ruled that due to carnage (errant shots, splinters, grapeshot, elbows, knees, fists and swords) each of the heroes was going to take 1k1 damage per round that they stayed on deck.  Not a lot of damage but certainly got them thinking about trying to resolve problems amicably the next time (course when that time came, they just attacked willy-nilly again, sigh).

Oh and half damage for those in the rigging.  Below decks, of course, there was cannon fire and barrels of gunpowder. heh heh heh

I have the rules for handling grapeshot and such in ship to ship combat. My particular situation is a little different.

The cannons haven't been fired. This is rifle fire from the men on the deck of one ship firing on those on the deck of the other ship. Brute squads are firing into the meleeing crowd of soldiers and characters.

There are massed fire rules in the Montaigne book. it comes out to something like roll x dice for a brute squad. each 8-10 is a hit and inflicts 5 flesh wounds to all heroes. (don't have the rules in front of me.) it is good to wounding heroes before the fight and clearing out some brutes.

Based on the number of enemy vs the crew, I would use the enemy Brute musketeers to take out the friendly Brute crew.   You still get to describe the explosion of massed fire into the melee, but the heroes still get to keep at the sword work.  Yet, they will know there is a threat of more firearms if they don't do something about it.

If you need to roll dice, use the GM tool of rolling, looking concerned, scratch some calculations on paper, then describe the results.

Thanks all. I'll mull over these ideas and see what I come up with. If any of you are interested in taking a look at my pbp game, send me a PM. It's off-site and I don't know what the policy here is.
