Launched from an escape pod with a blinking bomb, riding through volcanic jungles on an alien lizard, leaping out of hyperspace only to face a fleet of Impreial Star Destroyers...you reach for your D-20...only to find D-10s?I've been working on a website to help me get a job when I graduate from college. It's still a work in progress but one of the first things I wanted to put on there was the Star Wars Roll and Keep rules I came up with my friends so that we could play Star Wars without the randomness of the D-20 system. Since it's been talked about on these forums before, I thought Imight share it with you.Star Wars Roll and KeepI also have Starfighter combat rules coming soon. They have not been tested yet, but I found them to be much easier than 7th Sea ship combat rules since there is only one person at the controls.

That's a great idea. I'll check out your site and the rules. It seems a perfect match of system and genre. I was a huge fan of the D6 system for its simplicity and usability. Not at all a fan of D20.

Thanks for the link and I'll be sure to get back to you with my opinion.

Thanks!

I haven't played D6 but from what  I heard, it was better than D20 because it didn't have a level system.  But I also heard that force users were more balanced in D20.  In D6, if you had the force you tended to be way overpowered.

For the Roll and Keep system I treated the force like a 7th Sea sorcery.  There are three ranks; Initiate, Knight, and Master.  Each rank unlocks more powerful abilities for a force user to attempt.

To prevent the force from being overused I used the general 7th Sea rule that a drama die must be spent each time it is used.  However, some characters who are powerful in the force may want to use it more than 3 or 4 times a session.  So I borrowed from the Glamour school of sorcery.

Like Glamour, force users receive a Force die for every -10 or +10 they are aligned in the force.  Glamour used reputation but Star Wars uses the character's  light side or dark side points.  And like Glamour, these force dice can only be used to activate force powers and cannot be used like drama dice.

I like your R&K adaptation, but I think I? change a few things IMHO:

Spending a DD for each invocation of the Force is tricky. It all comes down to whether you want to "balance" Force-user with the rest of the players. If you do, the DD cost seems appropiate, specially with the Force die thing adapted from Glamour, a nice idea BTW. However, IF (and that is a big IF) you want Force-users to be a bit more like in the movies, I? not sure that the DD cost is appropiate.

A middle ground would be to grant some automatic bonuses to Force-users (leaping, lightsaber combat, sensing basic stuff, TK, etc...) and making the nastier "powers" (lightning, precognition, concentration, energy absortion, hibernation trance, etc.) cost a DD.

Another thing I? look into if you haven? read D6 is the force skill split, which was Control, Sense and Alter. Control was used for well, controlling your body (concentration, detoxify poison, hibernation trance, resist pain, etc), Sense for all the sensing stuff (farseeing, sense emotion, etc) and Alter for all TK and lightning showbiz. I beleive that even D20 took these three skills, as they seem to separate the main areas of the Force quite effectively.

Going back to what I mentioned about small "free" bonuses from force skills, let me give you an example with the above skills:

Control: add your Control rank to all rolls involving your Resolve trait, as well as to any Brawn rolls for resisting poison or fatigue.

Sense: add your Sense rank to all perception rolls and to all Active Defense rolls.

Alter: add your Alter rank to all leaping and break fall rolls

I have a few more ideas on the Force, I?l see if I post them later. You know, many of us ranted about making a R&K SW adaptation more than once, but you are the first trooper to actually write something .

I?l check the skills part and comment later. BTW, I think this idea really rocks.

The rule system I came up with was meant to be simple compared to that of 7th Sea.  My goal was to make less knacks for a less complicated game.

Whenever something involved summoning the force within a Jedi's body, I considered it to be part of the Energy knack.  Force lightning for example is the most offensive use of Energy because it channels the force through the user's body and emits it in the form of a physical attack.  However by using the light side of Energy a force user can use some of the things you talked about like detoxifying and healing.  Although I don't remember a Jedi ever being able to magnify distances?  To me that seems like they would try and "sense" out the lifeforms.

I'll wait until you read over the skills section to post anything more about that.  I know it can be easily criticized for its simplicity but my feelings was that it suits the basic adventure that most Star Wars players expect.

And thanks for the props!  Using R&K rules was the only way I would run a Star Wars game so that was really all the encouragement  I needed.

I love you, Mr. Big!  Err... in a manly, platonic kinda way...

I've been telling my players for a long time that 7th Sea would be a wonderful system for Star Wars.  They shift back and forth between understanding and disbeleiving, so I've never taken the time to write up all the conversions I would need.  Your ideas and website certainly give me a boost in the right direction!

Thanks!

Richard
