Sebastion's e-mail to me may have put it best: (I paraphrase)

"Valhalla, Elysium fields, Nirvana or whatever hereafter he was aligned to, Mr. Gygax is now on his way to it."

He was 69, had been battling several health issues and if you want some solid info on it look to Dragonsfoot or Troll Lord Games sites and forums.  Those folks knew him best in the current industry.

Most of us have played something he was involved in creating.  The rest of us have played something he was an inspiration to in some way shape or form.

Best to you all.

When I met my current group, they were playing one of his mods.  Some of my favorite 3e stuff was a re-work of his originals.  He sure made alot of people happy.  (or not, you know what I mean if you played his 1e stuff)

To even make an attempt to describe the gallons of thrice-filtered evil required to bring such a horrible monster into being would need to include sound effects of barking dogs, a high school marching band, a plate of escargot and an entire routine of slapstick comedy performed by trained rodeo clowns and some ebola monkeys. Like I always say, you can always use ebola monkeys to help illustrate a point. All of these things would need to be gathered into a big pile and poked with pointy sticks to even begin to describe the kind of evil I'm talking about. That's evil man.

I shan't say I'll miss him, I haven't followed his work very much recently, but I will say one thing:

Of all the people I have never met, he has given me the most fun entertainment and enjoyment, the work of his life has been, and still is one of the things closest to my heart. He has by proxy given me endless hours of fun, fellowship with my friends and wonder. for that I salute him. I owe him the sincerest of all thanks.

Gary's worlds have been a part of my life since I was in 8th grade.
Now, I'm 42, and I can look back on the influences and people in my life because of what this man did.
I can't imagine me without it.

This is for Gary...

Death of the Creator

They gather around in silent vigil
Hordes of mounted warriors carrying lowered flags
Wizards in circles with staves in hand
Moonlit wings beating in the darkness above.

The horns of sorrow wail out somewhere
In the distant jagged peaks to the North
amidst the melancholy moans of a numerous hidden beasts
The Creator has fallen, his sleep eternal

No Scribe touches quill
No Tome is opened
No sword unsheathed
No fang bared

No clanging of metal
No incantation spoken
The Bard's song unheard
No die is cast

And the dwarves find yet another reason to drink in memory of...

But then...
Flags get raised
Swords held high
Shouts of clans too numerous to count

Beasts roar
Dragonfire lights up the sky
Missles fly...........and never miss
Swarms of arrows weave through the winds

The glorious adventure doesn't die
but instead intensifies with the realms
All in the name of the Creator,
Gather ye round now and listen

To the eternal battle held in the heart of the brave,
To the bold,
To the wise,
To the foolish,
and to anyone else who dares enter these worlds,

we say...

GAME ON!

Thank you, Gary

RE:Gary Gygax has left the building
(Date Posted:03/06/2008 18:14:46)

I met him just once.  It was the last year that GC was in Milwaukee.  I was sitting one of the hallways playing 7th sea (having just been introduced to it earlier in the year), becide me were a few of the Lejendary Adventures books (what can I say, Im a Gygax whore).  A man walking through the hallway stopped to ask if I had played LA, and I replied that, though I hadn't, it was a Gygax creation so I simply had to read it.  He replied, "I'm glad you feel that way, it makes all my writing worth it."

I was so stunned, I just sat there.  Gary walked away and several people at the game just laughed at me.
