Ugh. I wonder how much Raleigh's descendants paid for the good press?

I liked most of it.

I would have preferred fewer of Walter's romance novel speeches about the nakedness and exposure one feels at sea. Also, I would have liked to see Drake as something more than an old man shuffling papers.

However, the intrigues and twists are well done. The look is incredible.

And you have Geoffrey Rush.

It is worth a matin? ticket.

It was pretty, for sure. The costuming and sets were gorgeous. And of course Cate Blanchett is a perfect Elizabeth. Geoffrey Rush was good, too. It might have been good if maybe the writers had used a history book once or twice ...

Some of my favorite parts:

I LOVED Mary Stuart's Scottish accent.

The two of us who went to see it were giggling way before the Spanish Armada showed up. One more reference to Raleigh's 'shining colony' in the New World and we probably would have been evicted. I think we were the only ones in the theater that knew what became of the glorious Roanoke. Snort.

We tried not to be TOO obnoxious during the suspenseful battle scene, but it was tough. I mean, I was just relieved that Raleigh was there to help poor, doddering old Drake manage that battle -- since Frobisher and Hawkins didn't even bother to come. I mean, what WOULD England have done if the dread pirate Raleigh had not been there to light the fireship?

And I ALWAYS bring my horses up on deck during a sea battle ... especially in hard weather. It's tough without a crane, but we manage.

And it only occurred to us after the movie was over ... but what type of trees were those that the Spanish were cutting down to make the ships? We think we remember pine (!) but we're hoping we're wrong. Otherwise, it's no wonder England won. I don't think pine would make very good ships.

I could go on and on, but I want to save some for others.

All I can say is...

...if the history is as "accurate" as the first one, I'm avoiding it like the plague...

Er... sea battle? Ugh... don't... don't tell me they have put a major sea battle type scene (since there was none of that type) in the whole Armada thing... (ok, do tell me, was just being rethorical)

Which part did you want to hear about?

The brilliant use of fireships ... in the open water of the Channel?

The fire and carnage caused by the extensive battering of ships by cannon fire?

Raleigh's valuable advice to Drake during the battle?

The horses running loose on the deck of an armada ship ... until they jumped overboard to swim around with the other flotsom?

Raleigh's impressive skill at the swashbuckling rope swing?

I think those are the highlights. There may have been others and I am repressing the memories ....

Is this directed by the same guy as the first one? The one who said something along the lines of "I don't care what the history was, I'm just going for a good story" (or words to that effect?")

Story wise, I wasn't impressed with the first movie, and will probably wait until this comes out on DVD and watch it at a friend's house.

I dunno the director. I don't keep track.

Do wait for the DVD and let someone else pay for it. It's worth the watch for costuming if for nothing else -- if you can get around all the blue Elizabeth wears.
