I haven't posted here in quite a while, but I really feel that I needed to for this one:

As I went to the 7th Sea official website (http://www.7thsea.com/) the other day...and I noticed quite a few changes.

The first thing that I noticed is that the game is no longer called "7th Sea", but is now called "Swashbuckling Adventures"! As I had read further, this is the title for the d20 version of the game.

The second thing that I noticed is that it's a little more difficult to find anything on the website, and to try to do "product research" takes quite a bit longer.

Considering the amount of materials that has been released by Alderac Entertainment Group for the d20 System, the non-support for the "Collectible Card Game" (of which they said that they were basing the storyline on) and the lack of actual 7th Sea game system materials, I have one major question...

Is the game of 7th Sea dead?

Just Curious,

I shouldn't think so- they did just come out with the Crescent Empire sourcebook. Of course, their website on the other hand- I've always found it lackluster.

The d10 version is still going strong. They have been pushing the d20 version more lately trying to capture new players. I think the Cresent Empire book is the last d10 only book after that the new books will be covering both systems. The d10 stuff may be under Roll and Keep as that was how they listed the d10 7th sea events at Origins game convention. The CCG has met its doom and is not in print anymore. As far as the website goes I've never looked at it.

I seriously doubt that it's dead, but I do think the game will change it's format to some degree.

Swashbuckling Adventures is designed to get people who play little outside of DnD into the genre. IMHO I think this will not happen to the extent we'd all like; they'll play Swashbuckling Adventures and buy a few modules and convert them to D20.

If this is the case then AEG will need to see whether it's still profitable to produce d10 material. As SA has just come out, I doubt we'll see a new d10 edition any time soon (but we might). With that in mind, new material will fall into two catergories - d20 style source material and Thean guides. As the 7th Sea setting is now tied into d20 then material needs to cover both areas. You can't have d20 player-material which is entirely new to d10 players as the new d20 stuff must incorporate certain aspects of the game world. Also, d20 books - like class guides - are of no real use to d10 players.

I think material that comes out in the future will be more detailed but perhaps less grand. E.g. perhaps a new pirate nations book with far more info on a pirate town & setting, but which relies less on the history of La Boca and the Brotherhood.

Consider also the recent changes AEG have made; dropping the CCG, redeisn of the book formats, website overhaul, etc. The impact of these needs to be measured, so I think we'll see a brief lull whilst SA finds it feet and a new direction is determined. After that it will either be a healthy mix of d10/d20 material or a halt of the line. I really can't see one going forward without the other.

And this is all speculation and conjecture!

The roll and keep game IS NOT DEAD. Neither is John Wick. (Yes I'm still getting some personal notes from friends that are still getting around to that rumor)

The new books after the core d20 stuff is released will contain dual stat info for both systems. It sounds like they have no plans of ever releasing anything as exclusively R&K or d20 after that (adventures included)

As for the website, it's designed as a business site to promote the current product. I'm certain if you went to the Ford Motor Company website, you would have a hard time finding info about a '57 t-bird too. Is a search going to take longer now that there is more product? certainly unless both you and AEG have upgraded their computer systems to faster machines recently.

I do like the R&K version of 7th Sea and truly hope it doesn't die....

But I just love the new D20 version of what I've seen in Swashbuckler's Handbook. Just great!

AEG is just keeping up with the current trend in RPGs. They are putting more focus on the d20 system, since it is the hot system out there. Also if you'd read any of the trade info on 7th Sea etc you'd know what is going on.

Don't get me wrong here...

I do like the d20 Game System, especially the new Dungeons & Dragons 3rd Edition.

But what originally attracted me to the game in the first place was Alderac's game system, and the source materials that were provided for the game of 7th Sea!

If I wanted to play d20...I'd be playing Dungeons & Dragons 3rd Edition, not the cookie-cutter version called Swashbuckling Adventures.

Why would I choose to play an imitation version, when I can play the real thing?!?!

A very distraught,
