Two things I would add: effects of aging and a more realistic damage system (i.e. long term effects of trauma). Fifteen years ago, Ranger Thwak could run twelve miles, jump out of an airplane, climb cliffs, trees, and the occassional building, and happily wade into the middle of a barroom brawl with a smile on his lips and a song in his heart. Ranger Thwak also dislocated nearly every joint you can think of, strained, sprained or just abused knees, hips, ankles, and pretty much every other part of the leg, and has be stabbed, shot, blown up, thrown out windows, kicked, punched, clubbed, bit, and pimp-slapped half a dozen ways from Sunday. Fast forward fifteen years: Big Daddy Thwak can safely climb the stairs (with a handrail), run to the bathroom during commercials, and dreads fighting with the lid to the pickle jar. My point is, abuse adds up. The stuff my caharacter Liam used to do would cripple a Mere Mortal. Gunshot wounds take a LONG time to heal. Getting stabbed or cut is never fun, and the official definition of a sucking chest wound is, "Pretty much any wound to the chest sucks..." Then there's the aging thing - is it just me or is there more gravity and less oxygen than there was a decade ago? I don't know, maybe a permanent penalty if you receive more than three times your Resolve in Dramatic Wounds. Of course, then we get a bunch of middle-aged Knights of the Rose & Cross sitting around the chapter house bitching about how all of the younger generation are a bunch of little sissy-boys. And then you've got to start worrying about health insurance (you KNOW the Sweordsman's GUild isn't picking it up...) and Medicaid. I know, the Knights of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield... Never mind. Matlock's on the tube; I gotta go... (Where's my walker, dag nab it?!?!)

Aging would be a good addition as the system has an active timeline.
i would like to see a definitive set of rules for building new skill sets (some of the new AEG additions have way too many knacks) Along with better rules for gaining individual knacks during game play.
I also think there needs to be a change in some of the defense knack rules for when you can or must use certain knacks. I cite balance in particular. I've seen a few games where balance was mandatory for a ship docked in harbor on a still day which makes no sense. We've argued about using certain defenses while swinging into a group of brutes with a sword in hand. I think a default list should be in place there.
I'm sure I'll come up with something else when I log off, but that's it for now.
Administrator comment: This has the potential to be a great thread. DO NOT go mucking about turning it into another d20 vs. R&K system debate. If you have a certain particular item that you feel is superior, fine. Otherwise, leave it lie.

$%*'`[snooty from work]%*'`@Id like to see a way of knocking out a henchman or a hero/vilain in just one blow...
even if he has to be drunk and you have blackjack him behind the head by surprise in the dark ... well maybe not that much there should be a wayother than inflicting 12 dramatic wound ...an idee?

Well... I've gotta disagree on the aging aspect. Aging rules *do* exist in 7th Sea.
They're optional.
I don't use them and neither does AEG for the most part....
If they use aging than Linnae Knute was scarier then, than he is now!
Anyways, aging stinks for one reason. It's realistic. I'm not going for realism in 7th Sea. Nuff said.
What would make it a better game? Mechanically it's very sound. I would just have to say... lower the price of books and supplements.

$%*'`[DANA]%*'`@ The biggest thing i think that would improve the system is something in black and white that would encourage people to boost skills. i'm getting tired of having to tell players they cannot boost their stats AGAIN while their skills sit at 1 point. i believe the correction to this would be to simply state that you cannot add more than 1 point to a stat in a given year. sure, people boost themselves, but how quickly can you pump up? this would also encourage people to buy new skills and swordsman schools since they can't just boost their stats. doesn't fix people who start with insanely boosted stats and no useful skills, but it will help with developing characters.
as for the aging thing, i think it would be easy enough to simply state that you lose 1 stat point for every year after 35. that way the player can choose where to lose the point and can buy it back with experience points.
those are the only really big things i see a need to correct.

No more than one stat increase a year? That would suck for a character that has both Valroux and Torres and gets master level for both in 1669....

Okay, here I go getting all disagreeable.
Personally, I hate aging rules. Yes, I know I'm not as young as I used to be either. Been a long time since I could swim a mile and I have broken my tailbone rollerblading but that's reality. Please don't put too much reality in my fantasy. The aging rules were one of the things I hated about Traveler when I played. I don't want to put a lot of time and effort into my character just to watch them lose things to age. It's why I played the long lived races in D&D.
So, just my personal little rant about aging.
