Plot / Adventure Ideas ***SPOILERS***
In keeping with my "Turn Background explanations on their Head" policy, I present Mistaken Identity.
So this background means that people keep thinking this person is someone else (good or bad) and wacky hijinks ensue. It could be good if you have a parallel set of adventures for the hero to fall into. But my idea is to turn the whole thing around. The Player keeps seeing people that he/she thinks they know but who deny any knowledge of the hero. For this to work, it is imperative that the player do a 3x3x3 because they're the NPCs the hero will meet.
So how to resolve this. The most obvious solution is that the hero is insane. This would work well with the ‘digger' adventure I wrote way back at the beginning of this thread. Problem is how to involve the other heroes (who'd obviously be able to recognize that the hero was a bit ‘off'.
Next, ala one of those horrible movies I've forgotten the name of, you could have syrneth enacting a plot for world domination (or country, city or animation domination, whatever your preference) and the hero has the key which, if discovered, will completely annihilate the villains. The syrneth have threatened all the hero's friends/family/loved ones that they will kill the hero if they even start down the path. So, to keep the hero safe, the loved ones are denying he/she exists.
Alternately, the ‘loved ones' are really the remnants of an Explorer's Society exploration. The hero found an item which, when activated erased all their memories. In addition, it changed the hero's memories such that he/she believes these are his relatives. The fun part of this would be that the hero would have memories of people who didn't remember him AND there'd be a group of people (the hero's true loved ones) who remembered him/her but whom he didn't remember.
Finally, stealing from a certain director there's always "the hero is dead" scenario. The hero has conversations in which they believe that the loved ones are denying their existence, but in reality the loved ones don't see, hear, know the hero still exists. (but, of course, someone will have to see dead people.)
Hope that gets you thinking, again.
