Re :   Gen-Con 2008 Whats the plan?

I have to agree that the con was terrific.  I had a wonderful time, enjoying almost every game I played in.  CoC was phenomenal!  I got way too little sleep, spent one night speaking with the line developer and freelancers at CGL until 3am.  Talked about metaplots and other stuff and so I am really looking forward to writing for them.

As for my Vesten game, I respectfully think Dana missed the point.  I took a full-on warrior party and let them NEGOTIATE their way to resolution.  It was terrific.  There was precious little violence in the game as the warriors discovered that talking does have its place.

Now next years adventure, well, that's an entirely DIFFERENT kettle of fish...

Re :   Gen-Con 2008 Whats the plan?

I am also glad I never ran that one.  It's much better suited to the gencon mindset than the style of play we see at Origins.  (as well as the players, I can think of 4 that would love it and the rest would have been trying to decide exactly when I went mad and decided they wanted to play singers)

good to know it was a good event, glad to hear it was a good convention.  this is the only comment I have seen about how the convention went at all.  I was beginning to think, they had not actually held a convention.

Re :   Gen-Con 2008 Whats the plan?

Gencon was awesome!  I ran a couple games of 7th Sea focusing on the Knights of the Rose and Cross.  In particular, the Wandering Knights were teaching some Initiates the Knightly Art of Wenching.  It went over well and was a lot of fun.  My group (Plaid Chameleon) ran several other 7th Sea games as well so there was a lot of swashbuckling going on.

We also ran the LARP which turned out well.  Dance, Dance, Montaigne Revolution.  Singing, Dancing and Speechifying.  One couple brought an Ipod and did a full tango.  Lady Cassandra sang "I am the very model of a noble Montaigne Dilettante".  Corone had the greatest line, something about, "I'm going to go have sex with this woman and if she doesn't attempt to kill me, I'm going to be really disappointed."  Players crawling under tables.  Tons of fun.  In the end, I'm really glad Salamanca never used this one.  :)

Even better, I got to play a 7th Sea game that Black Jack ran featuring Vesten Raiders.  Bickering with my wife who played my character's twin sister was a hoot and it is the first time I've gotten to play with either my friend Eric and Sirhobbit in years.  The end turned out pretty anticlimactic since Sirhobbit managed to defeat everyone singlehandedly, but I can't really hold that against him.  :)

Also, this was my big roll out of the Plaid Chameleon website.  It features fiction, adventure hooks, npcs and lots more cool stuff.  Come by and check it out.  It even has a few more details about my (non-7th Sea) Gencon in the forums there.  The address is Plaidchameleongames.com.

Re :   Hungarian help needed

Try one of the larger public libraries available to you.

Chicago's, for example, has VHS tapes and CD's for learning languages- including Hungarian.

Topic :   Hungarian help needed

I know this is a longshot, but considering that the Crescent book had Hungarian influences, I thought maybe someone could give me a hand...

I got cast in a play where I've got to use a Hungarian accent. Now,
thankfully the director has provided me a CD to help with the dialect.
Unfortunately though, I've got a few lines in actual Hungarian that the
director doesn't know what they mean or how to pronounce them. Any help
you folks can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Re :   Plot / Adventure Ideas ***SPOILERS***

In keeping with my "Turn Background explanations on their Head" policy, I present Mistaken Identity.

So this background means that people keep thinking this person is someone else (good or bad) and wacky hijinks ensue.  It could be good if you have a parallel set of adventures for the hero to fall into.  But my idea is to turn the whole thing around.  The Player keeps seeing people that he/she thinks they know but who deny any knowledge of the hero.  For this to work, it is imperative that the player do a 3x3x3 because they're the NPCs the hero will meet.

So how to resolve this.  The most obvious solution is that the hero is insane.  This would work well with the ‘digger' adventure I wrote way back at the beginning of this thread.  Problem is how to involve the other heroes (who'd obviously be able to recognize that the hero was a bit ‘off'.

Next, ala one of those horrible movies I've forgotten the name of, you could have syrneth enacting a plot for world domination (or country, city or animation domination, whatever your preference) and the hero has the key which, if discovered, will completely annihilate the villains.  The syrneth have threatened all the hero's friends/family/loved ones that they will kill the hero if they even start down the path.  So, to keep the hero safe, the loved ones are denying he/she exists.

Alternately, the ‘loved ones' are really the remnants of an Explorer's Society exploration.  The hero found an item which, when activated erased all their memories. In addition, it changed the hero's memories such that he/she believes these are his relatives.  The fun part of this would be that the hero would have memories of people who didn't remember him AND there'd be a group of people (the hero's true loved ones) who remembered him/her but whom he didn't remember.

Finally, stealing from a certain director there's always "the hero is dead" scenario.  The hero has conversations in which they believe that the loved ones are denying their existence, but in reality the loved ones don't see, hear, know the hero still exists. (but, of course, someone will have to see dead people.)
Hope that gets you thinking, again.
Mark

Re :   Gen-Con 2008 Whats the plan?

What in the world are you doing posting here.  Go get packed then Post.  I thought you were one of those everything ready ahead of time GM's.  You're acting like me.

Example, the morning I left for Mamalade Dog, is when I packed.

Re :   Gen-Con 2008 Whats the plan?

OH MY GOD!!!
Do you all realize there's only 5 days left before GenCon?!?!
Worse, only 4 days until I leave
I haven't packed my clothes, dice, gaming books, computer, toiletries, etc., gotten my costume ready for transportation, printed out Character Sheets  and Handouts, or checked to see that my plane is actually going to leave (rather than going out of business).

Re :   Travel Time

Thanks Cristina, I'll probably have to build my own apprx travel times table, because it's bound to be asked again,  but i'll use your info as a good start.

Re :   Travel Time

Do you intend to go vis the Great River or by sea?

River:

Say 3 mph by sweeps or tow path = 900 miles  = 300 hours = 13 days to Barcino.
Say 5 mph by sail = 180 hours = 7 1/2 days to Barcino.

Say an average of 7 1/2 mph by sail  = 5 days to Carleon.

So that's around 18 days one way and 12 1/2 another.

Sea:

Say an average of 7 1/2 mph by sail = 3000 miles = 16-17 days.

Re :   Travel Time

IIRC, in the Tower of Faith adventure heroes (at the behest of Cardinal Erika Durkheim, and the DK)  make the trade with Fauner Posen for General Montegue.  Fauner tries to screw them over but is unsuccessful.  Wacky Hijinks ensue.

I remember all this because Tower of Faith was the very first time I ever played 7th Sea.

Tower of Faith can be found in The Rapier's Edge

EDIT: As for where else the chart might be, I looked over on AEGs old site but no luck.  As for not buying it, I checked on ebay and there are two right now (one for 15  the other for  16 dollars) That's below cover price, but I bet you could find a deal somewhere.

MORE EDIT:  DrivethruRPG has a downloadable PDF for 12.50

MORE MORE EDIT:  If you're just talking about one trip (which I'm guessing you are because your players aren't interested in a ocean going campaign) you could always just tell us what the trip is. I'm probably competent enough to look it up.

Re :   Travel Time

Montague receiving the the letter form he party creates the end of the campaign in Ussura.  Montague orders the withdrawal of Montaigne troops and gets ambushed on his way out.

He is attacked again in eisen by Fauner Posen at teh point where his army is demoralized by the events in Ussura and crossing the mountains, physically weakend from the combat ad out of supplies.  Montague surrenders himself to Posen in exchange for allowing his troops safe passage to Montaigne.

Montegue is held for a ransom that Leon refuses to pay as it keeps h General out of his hair.  According to canon, he is released after the end of the revolution but I do not recall if it was the exiled royalists that bought his release or the revolutionary government.  My campaign saw him sprung much earlier by some players hoping to use his tactical knowledge in Freiburg.

"I think I can do you one better, Ships and Sea Battles, p.35 there is a chart with time in weeks (usually narrowed down to 2 week incriments) for travel from any nation to any other nation (including *ulp* Cathay).  Sorry I just threw up in my mouth a little bit."

Here's a glass of water to take off the taste. I don't suppose it's mentioned anywhere else? I don't have that book (And don't intend getting it - the players aren't interested in a seafaring campaign).

Thanks for the titbit Mr Rackham as always you are a scholar and a gentleman.

PS: I don't suppose I could tax your command of the subject further: After the events in Erebus Cross Pt 1 (no spoilers) in Ussura with the General - is there an official/canon aftermath to the event?

Thanks.

Still, I'm just after a ROUGH idea, I can shave days and weeks when required - but i'd like to be able to have a starting point.

Re :   Travel Time

Well, I know the question has been asked before, but at the moment I don't have the time to search, as I am getting ready for work (and finding it can be like cracking a safe; you got to know how and when the question was asked, who might have asked it, ect...) but did you check search?

But the major answer to your question, and I know that BlackJackRackham has stated this before: The distance between them is "the speed of plot".  Depending on how soon, or not how soon you want your group to get from one  place to another. You are the GM, it's your decision.

Realisticly, the time could take several weeks/months depending on the time and the currents of the ocean, and other objects you find along the way, or ones that find you.  The ones that find you, are usually not good.

Topic :   Travel Time

Hey folks,

I've dug throughout the books but as always I seem to find better solutions at the think tank here. Is there travel time explained anywhere or is it simply left to GM caveat? A player asked me how long it would typically take for a ship to get to Avalon from Vodacce and I simply don't know!
